Help Jamal become an electrician

Story
News

That moment in 2017 when I found myself in a room of my own after years of rough sleeping, I cried. It meant so much to me to do the simplest of things without needing to hide from the weather or feel self-conscious.

I had a good job for over ten years, working in painting, decorating and tiling. But in 2012, three of my close family members died within the same year. I became very low, almost giving up. My depression led to the loss of my job and my house. For the next four years I was on the move, sometimes staying with friends, often sleeping outside or on night buses to escape the cold. Then somebody told me about Streetlink, and how they could help. I knew that with support, I could pull myself up. Streetlink found me a hostel and referred me to St Mungo’s. Now thanks to their support I’m in stable housing and ready to get back to work.

I want to build on my previous experience to become an electrician. This is perfect for my technical and practical mind. Electricians are always in demand and I’ll be able to keep working for many years to come. It’s about helping people have the basics we all need - light, somewhere to cook, even to keep warm. The thought that I can get back to helping others? That just makes me really happy.
